Devorah Zealot Soodak, nee Deborah Ellen Soodak, aka Debbie Soodak, is back to one of her "favorite" people: Michael F. Hogan, PhD, the Commissioner of the New York State Office of Mental Health. Why you ask? Because of some traffic I got on the blog. A previous post on the titular individual got a few search hits earlier today. So much for rhyme or reason.

I decided to show you a little more about the man. I want you to know what really makes him tick. Like most people in positions of power, it seems to boil down to one thing. Follow the money. It makes me sick.

I had stumbled across this when I wrote the earlier post. I took the liberty of taking a screen shot for your viewing and reading pleasure and linking it to their site. Please click the links or the pic to see more. It's an interesting site.

Of course I ran some Google searches. That's how I do most of my research. It's also how I get the pretty pictures I'd love you to click on. As serious as this post is, it's also supposed to be some fun.

I found something I'd really like you to see. Texas is the worst state right now when it comes to drugging people, especially children, but many others aren't too far behind (like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York). Yes, I found it on a search that included Michael F. Hogan's name. Please take a look at it.

It's a pdf file. Please search for Michael Hogan. His name appears four times. If you don't like pdf's, you can look at the Google web cache. I'll give you the link to that next.

It's harder to find dirt on him from New York, but suffice it to say that ground zero for TeenScreen is the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia Presbyterian in New York. Michael F. Hogan himself dedicated the very expensive piece of real estate on Riverside Drive to Herbert Pardes, CEO of New York Presbyterian. Here is a picture of the bosom buddies.

That's a pair of my least favorite people. Herbie is not a nice guy. He's on the board of the Markle Foundation. We're talking some serious heavy duty ugly. You really should read this one, too. Once again, the same names pop up all over. Do you see Janssen Pharmaceuticals in there? These people are profiting from the pain of others and we are paying for it. Even if you don't care about "poor people" or "crazy people" it should make you angry. Why should you have to pay for this? It is beyond unnecessary.

Michael Hogan himself admits that OMAP was a very expensive failure. Unfortunately, he is only talking in financial terms. No one seems to factor in the cost of ruined lives.

I'm really trying to figure out his position on Kendra's Law. He isn't overly keen on it and neither am I. I'll save that for another post. Sometimes bad people do the right things for the wrong reasons. Go figure. I'd like to know why.

I think that's enough on Mikey for today. I won't even go into his stint as head of the Bush Baby's (that's W, to you) New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. I'll save that for another post, too. So much corruption, so little time.

Carpe Diem: The Epileptic Lunatic Leper is Sunless in Philadelphia

This is her blog, after all. She ran a Google search, of course, to go with it. She was more than a little bit suprised by the results. I think this post is going to be about Google searching, after all. Oh well.

I have a serious vitamin D defiency. What does that have to do with anything? Well, everything. I used to follow the usual (not so good it turns out) advice about avoiding the sun. Sunshine on our skin makes vitamin D. Vitamin D protects against cancer. Do you see where I'm going?

Good question. I can't. I've wasted I don't know how much money on supplements that make me sick because of the ingredients. Even the pharmaceutical grade vitamins are a no go. The only naturally good food sources are salmon and cod liver oil (as disgusting as you think it is) and I am extremely allergic to both. I'm allergic to dairy so I can't do that either (dairy products in the US are fortified with vitamins A and D). So, I need the sun.

I did some searching and found that what I need is a narrow band UVB sunlamp. They are extremely expensive. After some sleuthing, I found that I could make do with a desktop lamp that would do my face and arms. They are hundreds as opposed to thousands of dollars. Most of the cost of the units is the bulbs themselves. Yes, I priced those, too.

I got my doctor to write me a prescription for a sun lamp. It isn't very specific and it says for treatment of a vitamin D deficiency. That use is not yet approved in the US (it is in Canada). I don't know if I can gete Medicare to pay for it. I am getting sicker and sicker and I don't know if I have what it takes to negotiate that thicket. Isn't my doctor supposed to help with this?

I can tell you that one of the symptoms of the deficiency is that the skin on my face and upper arms is a mess. I guess I could tell the doctor to call it psoriasis or excema (it could be) so I wouldn't have to argue an off label use. I did find two peer-reviewed papers attesting to its efficacy. That may be good enough. I need to check with Medicare. I'll call them on Monday. What a chore.

Well, that's a lot about me. Now, to the search. Since I lack sun, I decided to search for .sunless in philadelphia.. That got me a whole bunch of tanning salons. How boring! So I decided to get a little fancy. I asked for the same search without tanning .sunless in philadelphia -tanning.. Imagine my surprise when I saw this.

It generated the exact same query with the exact same results. It's pretty annoying to have that ignored. I'm not looking for sunless places at the moment so this is purely academic, but I can think of searches where this would be a problem. Hey, Google! What's up with this?

I decided to do a little experiment. I tweaked the query. I searched for .sunless -tanning in philadelphia. instead. What a difference a word order makes!

It defaulted to my default location. As you can see, the search results are the same sans the places. It's not such a big deal; I just think it's a bit odd. Let's call it anomylous behavior and leave it at that.

Well, that's a little about me and a little about Google. (How'd a rainbow end up in this sunless post?) I guess that's not so bad considering what a headache I have. Description
English: The Milky Way arches across this 360-degree panorama of the night sky above the Paranal platform, home of ESO’s Very Large Telescope. The Moon is just rising and the zodiacal light shines above it, while the Milky Way stretches across the sky opposite the observatory. To the right in the image and below the arc of the Milky Way, two of our galactic neighbours, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, can be seen. The open telescope domes of the world’s most advanced ground-based astronomical observatory are all visible in the image: the four smaller 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes that can be used together in the interferometric mode, and the four giant 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes. The image was made from 37 individual frames with a total exposure time of about 30 minutes, taken in the early morning hours.

La lune vient de se lever et la lumière zodiacale est visible juste au dessus d'elle. Sur la droite, sous la voie lactée, on distingue nos deux compagnons galactiques, les Nuages de Magellan. L'observatoire est constitué de 8 dômes, tous visibles ici: Les quatre petits abritent les télescopes auxiliaires de 1,8 mètre qui peuvent être utilisés en mode interférométrique. Les quatre grands dômes abritent quatre télescopes géants de 8,2 mètres d'ouverture. Image réalisée en assemblant 37 clichés réalisés dans les petites heures du matin.
